On Wednesday, Gabriel and I drove ahselves down da bayou to have lunch with Great Gran and Great PaPa. It was a wonderful, memorable day! I didn’t want to leave! Gabriel’s Gran (my mom) and his Great Aunt Roberta also drove down to meet us.

Within minutes of arriving, Gabriel cheerfully christened Great Gran, Gran and Great Aunt Roberta with spit up. Seeing Great Gran get to her hold her little great grandson was so special. She held Gabriel so long in the big rocking chair that both of them dozed off for a while.

A strange, sweet phenomenon occurs whenever my mom gets to be around her grandson: she actually glows. It is such a pleasure for me to see my family’s delight in Gabriel.

Lunch was delicious: lemon-butter shrimp pasta, crusty french bread, caesar salad and caramel pecan cream cake. I cannot remember ever feeling the slightest sensation of hunger at Gran and PaPa’s house. In fact, my Gran and PaPa would be mortified to think that any person entering their home could be allowed to feel hunger or discomfort of any kind. 🙂

After lunch, we sat and talked around coffee and the caramel pecan cream cake. All of the sudden, mom had the idea to pour rum over the cream cake to give it a little extra kick. She found a questionably old bottle of Puerto Rican rum in the back of PaPa’s liquor cabinet and we poured it over our cake!

Mom also showed me a very old “mustache” teacup she had discovered in the china cabinet during her last visit. (Gran and PaPa’s house is literally built around hundreds of antiques Gran inherited from her Aunt Mint’s antebellum home in Alabama). A mustache teacup is designed specially to help a mustached gentleman (or bearded lady I suppose 🙂 drink tea in a polite and non-messy manner. How neat is that?

Also, PaPa showed me the poem I wrote for him when I was 10 years old, “A Child in Disguise.” He cut it out of the program from my school’s Grandparents’ Day. Yes, I used to be a little poet in my youth! 🙂 I think the poem is rather excellent for a ten-year-old ;).

Hi there!

I'm a south Louisiana girl, Catholic wife, writer, speaker, and mother of six. I've been chronicling things here as I've been learning to love and suffer and laugh and trust in the goodness of God in the ordinary and the extraordinary--with a little espresso and a lot of Divine Mercy.
