When Bath Time takes heroism

I will just tell you–bath time (really the End of the Day in general) isn’t usually a peaceful, soothing routine at my house these days. The kids are usually tired, sweaty, whiny and wound up. I’m usually flying solo. There are usually several small injuries, multiple sibling altercations involving one of the cheap little bath toys we have, and lots of water going where it shouldn’t go.
Oh…the screaming some days.
I am absolutely certain that it’s only by God’s grace that I–or any mother of little ones–keep it together sometimes when I’in the thick of battle with the End of the Day. And by keep it together, I mean just not whacking everybody upside the head yelling, “What is wrong with you people??!! before bursting into tears and slipping into a fetal position on the bathroom floor.
One of my favorite things about St. Josemaria is his great respect for mothers. Reading his thoughts on the dignity and heroism of motherhood has been a balm for my soul at times, as well as a welcome direction and challenge in my vocation.

“How many mothers have you known who have been the heroines of some epic or extraordinary event? Few, very few. Yet you and I know many mothers who are indeed heroic, truly heroic, who have never figured in anything spectacular, who will never hit the headlines, as they say. They lead lives of constant self-denial, happy to curtail their own likes and preferences, their time, their opportunities for self-expression or success, so that they can carpet their children’s lives with happiness.” –Friends of God

“The “miracle” which God asks of you is to persevere in your christian and divine vocation, sanctifying each day’s work: the miracle of turning the prose of each day into heroic verse by the love which you put into your ordinary work. God waits for you there. He expects you to be a responsible person, with the zeal of an apostle and the competence of a good worker.” -Christ is Passing By

I just love the last quote. You sound so much like me with my 3 yr old and my 2months away from 2yr old.

    God bless you Erin Franco!!

"Turning the prose of each day into heroic verse" – that's awesome, and appeals to both my mama and English major heart 🙂 Thanks for sharing!

His words are definitely a challenge, especially at the End of the Day. I find the last hour and a half before Daddy gets home (dinner, bath, clean up, clean up one–or several–potty training accidents, get ready for bed) to be the most exhausting of the whole day — and I only have one! (and another on the way). I try, but I'm sad to say that I'm not usually able to get past the mental countdown of "45 minutes 'til Daddy gets home" enough to refocus my efforts as serving Christ. It's not only the case at End of the Day, but it's hardest then, for sure.

Thanks for posting encouragement for us all!

Hi there!

I'm a south Louisiana girl, Catholic wife, writer, speaker, and mother of six. Since I started my blog way back in 2009, life has been a roller coaster of babies, plot twists and a plane crash or two. I've been chronicling things here as I've been learning to love and suffer and laugh and trust in the goodness of God in the ordinary and the extraordinary--with a little espresso and a lot of Divine Mercy.
